Remembering 9/11

In August of 2002 my young family and I traveled to NYC to see the 911 site. We went just after the cleanup was finally complete. There was just a devastatingly deep hole in the ground-something that doesn’t really translate to television or pictures.

Frankly, it was unfathomable and so difficult to look at. And this was after the devastation and cleanup! The hole was surrounded by a fence where thousands and thousands of flowers, crosses, pictures of loved ones, teddy bears, and American flags were carefully and lovingly placed in memory of loved ones and friends lost. This August, we traveled (with our now young adult children) to see the newly opened 911 Memorial. The Memorial is the perfect antithesis of the devastation and evil that took place there 12 years earlier. Where there was once fire, death, and chaos, there is now cool flowing water, a forrest, and an overwhelming sense of peace. There is even a Pear tree that has survived the attack in the 90s, the 9/11 attack and Hurricane Sandy. There are workers busily sawing and building the second new beautiful Super Tower built in the shadow of the N Tower. It is a hopeful, serene place. A solemn one to be sure, but it was such a blessing for us to be able to experience this. I highly recommend you take your families.

God was present that day. He left His mark in the Cross of steel that now stands ready for all to see in the Museum. He was with the folks who sacrificed to rescue others, comfort the afflicted, and He is with the folks who lost loved ones.

So with that in mind, Nova has a wonderful doc about the rebuilding of the site, and the first SuperTower that now graces this site. It’s uplifting and fascinating and offers us all a glimpse into how resilient God designed the Human soul. You can find it by clicking here.

Blessings,
